Class Description: Come have fun drawing using the Elements of Art: shape, line, value, mass, and form.

Enjoy exploring your creativity with hands-on projects. Experiment with a variety of different drawing media during this four-week class.

Time: 12:30pm – 2:30pm (all dates)

Cost:

Society Members: $40
Non-Members: $50

Students will need:

  • 9 inch x 11 inch sketchbook with at least 100 sheets
  • to wear clothing that can get dirty

Materials provided: (if you want to bring extras of the below items please, do)

  • 4b and 6b pencils
  • erasers
  • drafting pens
  • water-soluble black ink
  • mixing pans
  • charcoal
  • photographs of animals, castles, and landscapes
  • chalk
  • markers
  • color pencils
  • oil pastels
  • watercolor pencils and crayons

Week 1: students will create value scales using a variety of traditional drawing media (Discuss value, demonstrate creating a 10-value scale in at least two different mediums, and show examples of master artist who use this element in their compositions)

Week 2: students will draw animals using the basic shapes, circle, square, rectangle, and triangle (Discuss shape as used as a main compositional element; demonstrate how to break down an image into simple shapes, organic vs geometric, show examples of master artist)

Week 3: students will draw castles using the basic forms, cone, cube, rectangular prism, spire, and cylinder (show basic forms, demonstrate how to draw each form, using form in composition, and show examples of master artists)

Week 4: students will use line variation to create a landscape drawing (Discuss types of lines, using line in composition, show example of master artist)

About MaryAnn:

MaryAnn Goodhue completed her BFA in Sculpture from Augusta University in Georgia in 1988 and in 1993 received her Bachelor of Science in Art education from the University of Nebraska.

Since graduating, she has worked as an artist and art educator sharing her love of creating with students of all ages, teaching in Alabama, Virginia, Texas, and Nebraska. Goodhue’s paintings have been featured in a number of publications as well as being accepted into numerous juried exhibitions throughout the United States.
